  1. Carbon is a non-metallic element, with a
  2. chemical symbol C, and an atomic number 6, it
  3. has a relative atomic mass of 12.011. It 
  4. occurs on its own as diamond, graphite, and 
  5. as fullerenes (the allotropes). Its
  6. atmospheric form is familiar as coal, 
  7. charcoal, and soot. The atoms of carbon can 
  8. link with one another in rings or chains, 
  9. giving rise to innumerable complex compounds.
  10. Analysis of interstellar dust has led to the 
  11. discovery of discrete carbon molecules, each 
  12. containing 60 carbon atoms. The C60 molecules
  13. have been named buckminsterfullerenes. with 
  14. concentrated acids and with hot concentrated 
  15. sulphuric or nitric acids it forms carbon 
  16. dioxide.
